Puppy Linux
Latest version 5.0.0, released May
2010
IMHO, Puppy is the best of the lightweight
distros. It works well with little hassle.
Puppy boots from the CD and runs fast in RAM
memory freeing the CD boot drive for other uses, and this enables
the os to run on diskless thin work stations.
Data, hardware and communication settings can be saved to a HD,
CD/DVD, flash, or floppy.
Puppylinux can be used to access sensitive
sites, such as Internet banking, with minimal risk. A Puppy disc
stores the login and system hardware info and is only used to log
into a specific site, the required information is processed and
printed. The Puppy system is then closed down. Ideal for Windows
and paranoid Linux users. The Copyleft Puppy CDs are left open to
enable data and settings to be saved to the boot disc.
Puppy will run on old hardware and has the
light-weight apps needed for daily use. 32Mb RAM seems to be the lower limit.
Puppy can be installed various removable media, and to the HDD, but
grub needs to be configured.
