Is GNU/Linux for me?

If you can install Microsoft Windows then you can learn to install GNU/Linux.

If you want to get "under the bonnet" of your computer then you will enjoy GNU/Linux.

Who should consider Linux?

Those who run a network. Linux networks are very secure, stable and flexible. It is standard practice to run GNU/Linux servers with MS Windows clients.
The need for technical software - a lot is included in the packages and even more from other Linux sources.
The computer hobbyist looking for the most powerful OS available.
Those who wish to have complete control over their system and to re-write software as needed.
People who would like a Microsoft-free computer.
The cost conscious.

Who uses GNU/Linux?

You are in using standard unix system right now, the Internet. That is why the Internet uses the unix "/" instead of the Microsoft "\" to separate directories. The Copyleft site is hosted by an Internet Service Provider (ISP) who uses Linux as its operating system. There is a good chance that your ISP is doing the same.
It is common practice to link MS Window machines by a Linux network. An increasing number of schools and tertiary institutions are doing this and some are now starting to use Linux for their desktop machines.
Many people and organisations are using open source applications which have been ported from Linux to MS Windows. Hagley Community College being one example.

When the going gets tough then linux comes into its own. High quality graphics for the film industry demands a colossal amount of computing power. the Weta home page and some more about Weta. Weta's main computers run Linux and are ranked in the top500 machine lists.
